Why Local Marketing Is Critical for Landscaping Companies
Landscaping is a hyper-local service. Most customers search for things like:
- "Landscaper near me"
- "Lawn care in [City, State]"
- "Landscape design company [City]"
- "Weekly lawn maintenance [Neighborhood Name]"
If your business doesn't show up in those searches, your competitors are getting the calls instead.
Local digital marketing helps landscapers:
- Appear in Google Maps and local search results
- Build trust before the first phone call
- Attract customers who are ready to hire now
- Reduce reliance on word-of-mouth alone
Local SEO: The Foundation of Landscaping Marketing
Local SEO is one of the highest ROI marketing channels for landscapers when done correctly.
Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is often the first impression potential customers see.
Key optimization steps:
- Use your exact business name consistently
- Select the correct categories, but also, add as many categories as possible. (Landscaper, Lawn Care Service, Landscape Designer, Landscape Architect, etc.) Don't just add one or two categories and move on.
- Add your address if possible. Even if customers don't go to your address or you work out of your home, having an address is going to help you show up more frequently.
- Upload high-quality before-and-after photos
- Fill out your description as much as possible. You get 750 characters to use in your description. Fully fill the description with what you do, plenty of service keywords and geographic keywords throughout.
- Have a process to get reviews consistently. Send your review link to every new customer and past customer. (Review volume, frequency and keywords in the written review all have a huge impact on ranking)
- Post weekly updates and seasonal promotions
- Respond to every review (yes, even the bad ones)
We've seen landscapers increase calls just by optimizing and actively managing their Google Business Profile.
Landscaper Google Business Profile Example
Here is an example of a landscaper that started with our Local SEO services. They were consistently getting just a few Google Business Profile interactions each month. After we optimized their Google Business Profile and helped automate their review process they went from under 10 interactions per month to over 50 and are just getting started.
Have Your Website Rank on the 1st Page of Google
The second part of our strategy is to optimize your website to rank on Google. Most people design a website for looks and functionality but local SEO practices are often overlooked.
Follow some of these bullet points to help your website rank higher.
- Include your main service keyword and city / town in the h1 of your home page
- Include your main services & geographic areas in the title tag & meta description
- Each of your main services should have their own specific "service page" linked in the navigation (Example: Lawn Care, Hardscaping, Tree & Bush Trimming, Commercial Landscaping, etc).
- Each main service page should have a unique h1, title tag & meta description & URL slug with that specific service keyword and geographic keyword
- Your website content on each page should be at least 800 words in length.
- Include a FAQ section on the home page and each service page
- Include backlinks to different services on your website. When each page links to other areas of your website it helps Google understand the structure better.
- Make sure all pages are indexed via Google Search Console.
- Include a website widget for your Google Business Profile map & reviews to help link the two platforms.
Landscaper Google Search Results Example
Here is an example of a landscaper that started with our Local SEO services. The previous 6 months they had just under 900 impressions on Google Search. After we optimized their website they went from just under 900 impressions for the previous 6 months to 1,950 impressions in the past 6 months (a 2x increase).
Consider what it would do for your business if you had double the amount of people see your website when searching for a landscaper on Google or what it would mean for your business by also increasing the amount of phone calls you receive every month from your Google Business Profile?
Location Pages That Rank
If you serve multiple towns or counties, you should have dedicated service-area pages on your website.
Examples:
- Lawn Care Services in [City, State]
- Landscaping Company in [City]
- The URL Slug should include the service and city
Each page should include:
- Local keywords
- Photos from nearby jobs
- Testimonials from local customers
- Embedded Google Maps
- Clear calls to action

- Make sure your homepage and each service page has multiple call-to-actions

Social Media Marketing for Landscapers
Social media is an everyday essential for landscapers. Consider using your phone to snap a few pictures or videos every day. In a crowded social media space it's important you utilize multiple platforms and post multiple types of content. Don't just post to Facebook & Instagram, utilize stories reels and other local platforms where your customers are spending their time.
What Works Best
- Before-and-after photos
- Time-lapse lawn transformations
- Seasonal tips (spring cleanup, fall leaf removal)
- Customer shoutouts and reviews
- Behind-the-scenes crew content
Facebook and Instagram are especially effective for:
- Local brand awareness
- Retargeting website visitors
- Staying top-of-mind with homeowners

Digital Advertising That Delivers Immediate Leads
While SEO builds long-term momentum, digital advertising delivers faster results. Typically, we recommend doing both. While digital advertising can deliver quicker results, as soon as you stop advertising you lose out on showing up on the top of Google without doing any Local SEO work. On the other hand, local SEO work can drive more long-term results but typically takes a few months for significant ranking changes.
Google Search Ads for Landscaping Companies
When it comes to Google ads, you have so many options. There are Search ads, Performance Max ads, YouTube ads, etc.
I typically recommend Search ads. I feel that there is more intent behind them, even if they are usually a bit more expensive in terms of cost per click. To me, I would rather show up in my geographic area when people search "landscaper near me" rather than a YouTube ad for someone who isn't even interested in landscaping services.
Target high-intent searches like:
- "Lawn care service near me"
- "Landscape contractor [City]"
- "Hardscaping company [City, State]"
Smart Google Ads strategies include:
- Location-based targeting excluding people interested in your city / town. I always use this option. Otherwise anyone from outside your area can just type your city / town name and see your ad.
- Turn off Google Display Network & Search Partners: I want to focus on spending money on Google Search when someone searches for my products or services in my location. I don't want to waste money on pop-ups and other things on various websites.
Once your ad launches make sure you have conversion tracking set-up and are monitoring results.
If you have absolutely no experience with Google ads but want to try them, I suggest contacting us or another company to help get you started. It often costs less to have someone experienced manage your Google Ads campaigns for you rather than waste months of time and hundreds, if not thousands of dollars trying to figure it out for yourself for the first time.
Facebook & Instagram Ads
Facebook & Instagram ads are a great low-cost way to stay in-front of people in your city / town. It typically costs less than Google ads in terms of how many people you can get in-front of.
There are a few important things to consider before starting Facebook / Instagram ads.
- Make sure you have the Meta pixel installed on your website and have conversion tracking set-up.
- Lead ads work best if you have conversion tracking set-up. It attracts higher-intent people utilizing Facebook & Instagram's machine-learning.
- Utilize video if possible
- Make sure you are taking advantage of geographic targeting and age targeting as well. As a landscaper, I don't think you want to waste money putting your ad in-front of 18 or 19 year old's.
- Set-up a budget that will last a month. After 30 days, evaluate how your ads are doing. With conversion tracking active it should be obvious to see how many conversions you received and the cost per conversion.

Reviews & Reputation Management
Online reviews can make or break a landscaping business.
Strategies that work:
- Automated review requests after jobs with your Google Business Profile link. (Remember, Google Business Profile reviews help your ranking)
- SMS and email review follow-ups
- Featuring reviews on your website and social media platforms
- Responding professionally to all feedback
Landscapers with 4.5+ star ratings consistently outperform competitors in local search.
